St Andrew’s at Manakau was opened in December 1894. Designed by architect Frederick de Jersey Clare who designed about 100 churches in the Wellington area.. The land was donated by Rev. James McWilliam a CMS missionary in Otaki. Dwindling numbers have recently called into question the future of the church.

I began a new direction in January 2023. I was browsing my library of photography books and Bernd and Hilla Becher peaked my interest, they had dedicated their art practice to documenting the industrial landscape that was rapidly disappearing in their time . Todays fast changing culture has had me thinking how different things were in our past. I began to photograph the town and country churches in my locality. A few of these have already been sold for other purposes like cafes, sometimes converted into homes. One also recently (2021) burnt down. Those remaining are still mostly being looked after even if not in regular use.
